artist's statement
Initially, I fell in love with photography for the “magic” of the process. Nothing can compare with the anticipation of capturing an image, developing the film, then going into the darkroom and seeing the image come to life in the developer.
As I have become more adept at predicting and controlling what my final image will look like, I had to search for other ways to retain the
initial magic that I felt. In the age of digital photography, where it seems nothing is left to chance, I find myself stepping further back into the world of traditional film photography, not because of it’s nostalgic tendencies, but because of the element of chance it still retains.
My work deliberately embraces uncertainty and suspense, not only in my method, but in my choice of subject matter as well.
Looking at nature through the blur and soft focus, the images bring to mind the experience of being out in the woods, surrounded by light and a multitude of sounds.
For myself, being surrounded by nature is a very meditative experience, the closest thing to a religious experience that I have found. I hope that my images encourage similar contemplative encounters and that they may spark conversation on the uncertain prospects of our environment. The size and complexity of the images allows the viewer to become lost in looking, never quite understanding what they are seeing, but nonetheless, having an experience.
These photos are not meant to be matted, framed, and hung on a gallery wall.
I prefer to think of these images as objects that are as solid as any piece of sculpture that continue to move and change.
